It's a Long Way Back in the Dark

December 21, 2022

I made it to season two of Fear the Walking Dead. Episode seven is where this show starts to pick up steam. Before now, it was just okay. The title for this post is a quote from the episode.

I chose it because I'm in the middle of another attempt at the Sitdiary revival -- this time using Next.js with MongoDB Atlas. I have all users migrated into Mongo and I'm going to work on the posts and comments next, but it's a lot of trial and error to get the import process right -- especially, given I'm trying to stay on the free plan. I feel an intense need to get it right the first time as opposed to leaving things a patchy mess, but I suppose good enough will be well done. At this point, users just need to be able to see their public posts and then we can work on authentication and sessions, so that makes it easier.

Time for my second cup of coffee.

Christmas Week

December 20, 2022

It's the week leading up to Christmas and we're almost done shopping, but not quite yet.

Today, I finished watching season 11 of The Walking Dead. I think they did a great job ending it. I'm looking forward to the spin-off with Rick and Michonne.

I've been getting an API set up for Sitdiary, which has been a lot of fun. I'm still not sure if I can get it fully working before my priorities get shifted, but it'd be great.

Rainy Day

December 12, 2022

Today (well, now yesterday as it’s past midnight), I woke up to pouring rain. I absolutely love days like these. It reminded me of one Christmas break we had where my uncle, who ran the school computer lab, let us in a few times and about six or seven of us (my Dad, my uncles, my cousins and myself) played Unreal Tournament for a few hours.

Once the rain started to clear up, we took the kids to Universal Studios, which is currently Christmas themed. We had a great time, but have our sights set back on Disneyland for our next family theme park day.

Fixed the Gate

December 10, 2022

Fixed our side gate today. Over time, the gate had warped so the latch didn't reach the catch. I unscrewed the board the catch was attached to, wedged a cut piece of wood behind it, and screwed it back in. Works like a charm.

I've also been playing with OpenAI Chat GPT, which is simultaneously terrifying and amazing. You can have it write code for you, explain complex subjects in simple terms, or even ask it really weird questions without any obvious judgement.

I also took the boys to the library to get some books, then later, the whole family will go out to dinner and see a Christmas choir.

Hello

December 9, 2022

Somewhat recently, a friend asked me if there's anywhere I write regularly about what's going on in my life. For a long time, there hasn't been; I'm fairly private and inevitably try to write too much. So I figured, I write shorter, I'll write more often.
